Yup - one of the animals got skunked. This time it was Titan the cat. Luckily, the babies were already down for the night, so Jesse and I could go through the process of skunk decontamination without having to juggle babies too. On a cat - this is a bit tricky! So, if you ever have an animal, or person in your life get skunked, here are some rules to follow...
- DO NOT LET THEM INSIDE until you've cleaned them. We made this mistake with the dogs the last year. The house smelled of skunk for 2 weeks. They rub all over everything trying to get the oil off. Which only spreads the disaster.
- Change into clothes you can throw away. Just skunked animal is usually very upset, add water to the mix and you get one squirmy four-legged creature. It takes a full body hold to get the bath complete.
- Use the Mythbusters tested solution. And it's not tomato juice - you'll only end up with pink dog/cat.
1 qt Hydrogen Peroxide
1/4 cup Baking Soda
some dishsoap
It works decently well.
- Pray for rain. If said animal was skunked right outside the house, you've probably realized that up close skunk actually smells like rotten garlic. It's an eye-watering, make you puck kind of pervasive stench that feels like it has taken up residence in your sinuses. Rain makes the outside smell go away - We were sooooo lucky that it's a "California winter storm" right now - which of course just means its a little windy and there is some water lightly falling from the sky, but I'll rant about California weather in another post!
To make this post end on a happy note, I'll end with some pictures of Zailey and her fascination with eating her hand. Unfortunately, I missed the window to take a picture of her trying to eat both at the same time - super funny, although a little disturbing all at the same time!
Ok, so it's not her hand, but same concept - we have begun the phase of "everything must go into my mouth" - when does it end...high school?
